Full Body Harness Inspection: 7 Steps to a Safer Workday

A full body harness is one of the most important pieces of PPE for working at heights—but even the best gear is only as safe as its last inspection. In this guide, Dentec Safety Specialists breaks down the 7 critical steps to properly inspect your harness and maintain compliance with CSA Z259 standards, helping protect workers and prevent serious injuries.

Introduction

A full body harness is a critical piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) that can mean the difference between life and death in fall-prone work environments. However, even the best harnesses can fail if not properly inspected before each use.

At Dentec Safety Specialists, we’re committed to supporting Canadian workplaces with top-quality PPE and trusted safety expertise. In this guide, we outline 7 essential steps to inspect your full body harness—ensuring it’s in safe working condition and compliant with CSA Z259 fall protection standard.

Why Full Body Harness Inspections Are Crucial

A damaged or improperly fitted harness can lead to catastrophic failures during a fall. Regular inspections help:

✔ Identify wear and tear before it becomes a hazard

✔ Ensure compliance with safety regulations

✔ Extend the lifespan of your PPE

✔ Prevent workplace injuries and fatalities

7-Step Full Body Harness Inspection Checklist

1. Check the Webbing for Damage

  • Look for frays, cuts, burns, or chemical damage
  • Ensure no stretched or distorted fibers
  • Run your fingers along the webbing to feel for hidden weaknesses
  • Ensure no markings have been made on the webbing with a marker as this may compromise the strength of the webbing

2. Inspect Stitching & Seams

  • Verify that stitching is intact with no loose threads
  • Check for broken or missing stitches near stress points (D-rings, buckles)
  • Look for signs of abrasion where straps rub against each other

3. Examine Metal Components (D-Rings, Buckles, & Hardware)

  • Ensure D-rings are not bent or appear to be oval rather than the original round shape, cracked, or corroded
  • Test buckles and adjusters for smooth operation
  • Confirm no sharp edges that could cut the webbing

4. Assess the Tongue & Grommets

  • Check that tongues are not deformed or worn out
  • Ensure grommets are securely fastened with no cracks

5. Look for Chemical or Heat Damage

  • Discoloration, stiffness, or brittleness may indicate chemical exposure
  • Melted fibers or charring suggest heat damage

6. Verify Proper Fit & Adjustments

  • Make sure you have been trained by a competent harness fitter on how your harness should fit
  • Ensure the harness fits snugly but comfortably
  • Adjust leg and shoulder straps for even weight distribution
  • Confirm no excessive slack that could cause injury in a fall

7. Review Labels & Compliance Marks

  • Check for legible manufacturer labels with model and serial numbers
  • Verify CSA compliance and inspection dates

When to Retire a Full Body Harness

  • Even with regular inspections, harnesses must be replaced if:
  • If Load indicators have been deployed
  • Visible damage (cuts, burns, fraying) is found
  •  Fall arrest forces have been applied (even if no damage is visible)
  • Manufacturer’s recommended lifespan has been reached (Typically 5 years but this can be different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Please consult user manual to determine Manufacturers recommended lifespan.)
