{"id":21845,"date":"2022-11-14T15:55:35","date_gmt":"2022-11-14T20:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dentecsafety.com\/usa\/?p=21845"},"modified":"2024-05-07T17:02:13","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T22:02:13","slug":"cooper-health-university-hospital-trials-elastomeric-respirators-with-source-control-to-protect-against-covid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dentecsafety.com\/usa\/2022\/11\/14\/cooper-health-university-hospital-trials-elastomeric-respirators-with-source-control-to-protect-against-covid\/","title":{"rendered":"Cooper University Hospital: A Case Study on Elastomeric Respirators For Healthcare Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cooper Health University Hospital Trials Elastomeric Respirators with Source Control to Protect Against COVID.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Cooper University Hospital<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><ins><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/\">Cooper University Health Care<\/a><\/ins>&nbsp;is the leading academic health system in South Jersey and&nbsp;provides access to primary, specialty, tertiary, and urgent care, all within one complete health system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>8500+ Employees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>800+ Physicians practicing in more than 75 specialties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cooper Combating COVID-19 Since March 12, 2020 132,507 Patients tested positive and 4,355 hospitalizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hospitals throughout the region send the most complex and critically ill and injured to Cooper for treatment by their highly trained experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dentecsafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Cooper-Health.jpg\" alt=\"elastomeric respirator for healthcare\" class=\"wp-image-22771\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Background<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cooper University Hospital participated in the&nbsp;<ins><a href=\"https:\/\/aspr.hhs.gov\/SNS\/Pages\/default.aspx\">US National Stockpile project<\/a><\/ins>&nbsp;to trial reusable&nbsp;<ins><a href=\"https:\/\/dentecsafety.com\/usa\/products\/respiratory-protection\/comfort-air-nx-nxmd-series\/\">elastomeric respirators<\/a><\/ins>&nbsp;for their healthcare workers and selected the Dentec Safety Comfort-Air\u00aeNxMD Respirator and will be converting 8,800 staff to be fit-tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dentecsafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Cooper-Health-2.jpg\" alt=\"elastomeric respirators for healthcare \" class=\"wp-image-22775\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cooper\u2019s allotment was due to a request from State and Federal folks to respond to the NIOSH\/ CDC RFP regarding Hospital use of<ins>&nbsp;elastomeric half-mask respirators<\/ins>&nbsp;(EHMR\u2019s). Part of that participation provided successful applicants with acquiring product, that being one of the NIOSH approved EHMR\u2019s that provide source protection. Upon review of available choices, Cooper Health chose the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dentecsafety.com\/usa\/products\/respiratory-protection\/comfort-air-nx-nxmd-series\/\">Comfort-Air\u00aeNxMD&nbsp;<\/a>Respirator and seek to move to it exclusively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Obstacles<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No Source Control. COVID is an infectious disease risk.&nbsp; When Cooper tried to source other respirator vendors no one else considered that the healthcare worker could be infected and at risk.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supply Chain Issues. Like most hospitals<ins>,<\/ins>&nbsp;Cooper was facing supply chain disruptions for critical PPE during the peak of COVID.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overcoming misconceptions on the comfort and audibility of elastomeric respirators vs. disposables.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Findings<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dentecsafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Cooper-Health-3.jpg\" alt=\"elastomeric respirator for healthcare\" class=\"wp-image-22776\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Source Control. Prior to implementing the Comfort-Air\u00aeNxMD, educating and policing staff on the importance of source control was a challenge. Dentec\u2019s solution (an elastomeric N95 respirator WITHOUT an exhalation valve), overcame that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No issues with communication when wearing the respirator. In fact, it was clearer than using a competitive product with a speech diaphragm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MADE IN AMERICA! Dentec\u2019s elastomeric respirators eliminate supply chain issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easy to clean. The ease of maintenance of the source control on the ComfortAir\u00aeNxMD was key. Compared to other elastomeric masks which are difficult to clean and leads to the worry of contamination thus needing to be replaced.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Results: Most comfortable mask<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>85% of the healthcare workers stated that the Comfort-Air\u00aeNxMD Respirator is the&nbsp;<ins><a href=\"https:\/\/dentecsafety.com\/usa\/blog\/2022\/09\/12\/find-the-most-comfortable-n95-mask-everything-you-need-to-k\/\">most comfortable mask<\/a><\/ins>&nbsp;they have worn including disposable respirators. Kirchoff\u2019s Feedback \u201cThe Comfort-Air\u00aeNxMD Checks Every Box!\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cInitially, we didn\u2019t have good testing for COVID and asymptomatic spreaders. We tried to do source control in house to keep staff and patients safe, but other respirators with exhalation valves put staff and patients at risk. We constantly had to police, educate people. We were also facing supply chain disruptions and saw the emerging crisis with PPE shortages. I wanted to set up a response to address the question \u2018What are we going to do when we run out of N95\u2019s?\u2019. According to Dr. Kirchoff, this allowed staff to build confidence in the respirator and overcome any resistance or assumptions that switching from a disposable to Dentec\u2019s elastomeric respirator would be hot and\/ or uncomfortable. Staff found it was much cooler and easier to breathe, and most importantly better protection.
